Cannabis cultivation in the Tibet Plateau

According to the latest studies, the origin of cannabis is Tibet

According to new tests of cannabis pollen botany studies, researchers reach the conclusion that the origin of cannabis and its cultivation is located on the Tibetan plateau.

The research study was carried out by researchers from the University of Vermont, Middlebury College and Nothingam. And they have also tried to specify the place where the plant began. The results of the study have been published in the journal "Vegetation History and Archaeobotany".

Previous studies revealed that the origin of the plant is approximately 28 million years ago. And that most likely originated in Central Asia.

The researchers used as an approach the analysis of previous archaeological or geological studies that will mention cannabis. Noting that many of the notations refer to the pollen of the plant.

They then identified cannabis pollen at the excavation sites. It was not a trivial task because it looks a lot like hop pollen.

To solve that problem they took note of other types of pollen that were found with cannabis candidates. If the other pollen came from forest plants, the researchers assumed they were hops, whereas if they came from steppes, the pollen was supposed to come from a cannabis plant. Modern cannabis plants prefer the type of climate found in the steppes.

In previous studies on the origin of cannabis, the researchers found references to parts of southern Russia and northern China.

A deeper analysis led the researchers to believe that the origin of cannabis was the Tibetan plateau. They determine it near Qinghai Lake located at about 3,200 meters above sea level. They also highlight as a curiosity that in this site were found evidence of hominids (Denisova man) along with cannabis pollen.
